Fife Hunt was first published in Niel Gow's 1st Collection 1784. The composer, William Gow was one of Niel's many sons. A popular tune, the original setting was copied at least a dozen times over in books such as The Lowes, Surrene, Athole and Skye Collection.

The setting above is closer to the way it was played by two 20th century Cape Breton fiddlers Donald Angus Beaton of Mabou and his 1st cousin Mary Hughie MacDonald of New Waterford
