In My Hands ... Natalie MacMaster

tune information, links and notation

Track 14

Flora MacDonald:

This is a classic 18th century Scottish reel which has variations unique to Cape Breton's traditional repertoire. In the written literature from Scotland (see Skye Collection etc.) the tune had two turns. Cape Bretoners generally play four distinct parts. It was first recorded that way on 78 disc by Bill Lamey. Natalie plays the same 4 part melody but gives it a different mood by altering the tempo and swing.

The Cape Breton setting of tune is notated in The Dungreen Collection.
